Protect Your Health with Dr. Kwong
Extraction is recommended for hopeless teeth that are loose or too broken down. We also routinely extract impacted wisdom teeth.
We typically recommend extraction of wisdom teeth for one of two reasons. First is if there is not enough room for the wisdom teeth to come out properly. Second is when the wisdom teeth are too far back to adequately clean them. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, gum disease, cavities within the wisdom teeth and adjacent teeth, and crowding of nearby teeth.
The teeth are extracted under local anesthetic. You will be awake and alert during this procedure. If you need to be put to sleep, we will happily refer to the wonderful oral surgeon we work with. Many risks are involved with general anesthesia and our offices are not set up for this deep level of sedation. There will be additional costs associated with this option. We do however offer conscious sedation whereby we give you medication that will help to take the edge off the anxiety associated with surgery while at the same time keeping you awake. Most patients do very well with just the light sedation.
See POST-OP section for home care after extractions are complete.
