What is Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction or removal is precisely what it sounds like: the process of removing an unhealthy tooth completely from its socket. Depending on the case, surgical techniques may be needed; this often involves creating small incisions into the patient’s gum tissue to access a tooth that has yet to fully erupt above the gums or break up surrounding bone debris. Before any dental work is done, you’ll meet with Dr. Kwong, and he will discuss the details of the service and address any concerns you might have.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction at Our Clinic

A patient’s wisdom teeth can require removal for one of two reasons.

First is if there is not enough room for the wisdom teeth to properly emerge – this can lead to impaction. Tooth impaction can cause pain, infection, gum disease, and injuries to the adjacent teeth.

Secondly, is when the teeth are too far back to adequately clean them. As a result, cavities can form within or around the tooth and, if left untreated, the decay can reach the pulp.

Dr. Kwong will carefully examine your smile and oral cavity during your consultation and take several x-rays to determine the best course of action. The information gathered from doing so will help our team create a personalized treatment plan.

How a Tooth is Extracted

The teeth are extracted under local anesthetic. You will be awake and alert during this procedure, but will not feel any sensitivity or pain while Dr. Kwong works. If you require additional care to remain at ease, such as needing to be put to sleep, we will happily refer to the wonderful oral surgeon we work with. Many risks are involved with general anesthesia and our offices are not set up for this deep level of sedation. There will be additional costs associated with this option. We do however offer conscious sedation whereby we give you medication that will help to take the edge off the anxiety associated with surgery while at the same time keeping you awake. Most patients do very well with just the light sedation.

Dental forceps remove the tooth from its space after it is thoroughly loosened. The site is then sealed with stitches to help with sterilization and control bleeding. It is normal for your mouth to feel slightly sore after the treatment. Dr. Kwong will provide care instructions to you before you leave. Should you have any issues, get in touch with us right away.
