Save Your Tooth From Extraction

If you are experiencing an intense, throbbing toothache, you may require a root canal. When a tooth has either a deep cavity or a crack through its nerve, the nerve of the tooth can start to get sick. The body’s response to injury is to swell.

Inside every tooth is a soft tissue composed of a nerve and blood supply. When the nerve is severely injured, the soft tissue begins to swell but cannot expand within the confines of the tooth itself. Instead, pressure builds up and produces pain. Over time, the pressure will kill the nerve inside. The pain may go away momentarily; however, the tooth will be at risk of developing a painful infection at the root tip.

For these reasons, a root canal is prescribed to save the tooth. Under the care of our experienced dentist near you, Dr. Kwong, we guarantee that we can repair your smile. Come in for a consultation today.

What the Procedure Entails

Once your smile has been thoroughly evaluated and Dr. Kwong has reviewed your medical background, you’ll be approved for the root canal procedure.

We will ensure that the area is numb before commencing the procedure. If the nerve is infected, complete anesthesia may be more difficult to achieve as the infection counteracts its effects. At this point, we will recommend that the patient take the appropriate antibiotics to reduce the infection before completing the treatment.

Next, Dr. Kwong will carefully use a series of files to clean the debris from the tooth’s canals. Once the area has been properly disinfected, a rubber material called gutta-percha is used to seal the tooth so that bacteria cannot travel into the root system to re-infect the area.

A temporary filling will cover the tooth. Teeth that have received this treatment, especially molars and premolars, should have permanent crowns placed over them to avoid fractures.
